Making Healthy Choices Today for Your Heart Tomorrow

Heart disease is a concern for many older adults, but the good news is that many of the factors contributing to heart disease are within our control. In 2022, the CDC reported 702,880 heart disease-related deaths, highlighting the need for increased awareness and lifestyle modifications. With this awareness, we have the opportunity to make proactive decisions and positive change.

Taking Charge of Heart Health

Certain medical conditions and lifestyle choices can elevate heart disease risk, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, and sedentary habits. However, by embracing a healthy lifestyle, we can dramatically reduce these risks and enhance our overall well-being.

Getting Active

Adopting a healthy diet and staying active are pivotal steps in preventing and managing heart disease. Regular exercise not only strengthens your heart, but also boosts your mental and emotional health. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week—it's a manageable goal that can be easily integrated into your routine. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a fun dance class, or a weekend hike, every bit counts!

Nourishing Your Heart

A balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables is a cornerstone of heart health. Simple swaps, like adding extra veggies to your meals, or enjoying raw snacks with hummus, can make a big difference. Incorporating plant-based proteins, such as legumes and nuts, is another great way to support heart health. The American Heart Association encourages us to enjoy a variety of foods, including fish and lean meats, while making mindful choices about dairy products.

Reducing processed foods and added sugars is a fantastic way to nurture your heart. By reading nutrition labels and being aware of what you consume, you can make informed choices that benefit your health. Aim to limit added sugars to no more than 6% of your daily caloric intake, which is easily achievable with a bit of planning!
